Female Northern Flicker, yellow-shafted (eastern) variety... you do live closer to the Atlantic than the Pacific, don't you? You can tell she's eastern without seeing the inside of her wings (in my area, Northern Flickers have more of a reddish color to the underside of the wings) by the fact that her throat isn't gray, and you can tell she's female by the lack of a black malar mark. Have you ever seen two competing male flickers land on the same branch? They are funny--they don't fight with beak and talon, they chest bump each other until one falls off! They are usually very pleasant birds, a little less shy than most woodpeckers, but always fun to watch.
